Introduction To NDIS

What is the NDIS and how does it help people with disability?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a program that provides funding to eligible people with disability to improve their quality of life, including access to Supported Independent Living (SIL) and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA). This program allows people to gain greater independence, access new skills, and connect with their community.

One of the main benefits of the NDIS, is the ability to connect anyone with disability to services in their community. This includes access to doctors, community groups, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries, and schools. Additionally, the NDIS provides information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.

Currently, over 500,000 Australians with disability receive support from the NDIS, with many of them accessing SIL or SDA. This includes approximately 80,000 children with developmental delay who receive early intervention support to achieve the best outcomes throughout their lives.

Guide to NDIS Housing & Independent Living

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of paid personal support designed to help individuals with higher support needs live as independently as possible and build their skills. SIL can include help with personal care, cooking meals, and other daily tasks, and is often provided in a shared living environment or in the individual’s own home.

Who is SIL for?

SIL is best suited for people with a disability who have higher support needs, requiring a significant amount of help throughout the day, 7 days a week. This includes overnight support. SIL is often provided to individuals who are unable to live independently without support.

SIL in Shared Housing

For those who choose to live in shared housing, SIL can provide the necessary support to enable individuals to live with others and share supports. The NDIS will work with the individual to determine the reasonable and necessary supports they need each day, and then they can choose which provider they want to deliver their support. This may include support with household tasks, personal care, and accessing the community.

SIL for those living alone or with others who are not participants

For those who live alone or with others who are not NDIS participants, SIL may still be available to provide additional support. The NDIS funds a range of other home and living supports, such as personal care or individualized living options, and can work with the individual to determine their specific needs. SIL can be provided in the individual’s own home and may include support with daily tasks and accessing the community.

How to access SIL

To access SIL, you need to be an NDIS participant with an approved SIL goal in your NDIS plan. The NDIS will work with you to determine the reasonable and necessary supports you need each day, and then you can choose which provider you want to deliver your support.

It is important to note that SIL is tailored to each individual’s needs and preferences, and there may be other home and living supports that better suit an individual’s needs.

What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?

SDA is intended to provide housing solutions for people with extreme functional impairment or high support needs. These dwellings come with features that enable people to live more independently and receive better, safer support.

Eligibility for SDA

To be eligible for SDA, participants must have an extreme functional impairment or very high support needs and must meet the specialist disability accommodation needs requirement and the NDIS funding criteria. Eligibility for SDA can be determined through a meeting with an NDIS planner.

SDA Categories

There are four categories of SDA design:

  • Improved Liveability
  • Robust
  • Fully Accessible
  • High Physical Support

Each category has its own set of physical access provisions, which cater to different needs:

Improved Liveability

Improved Liveability housing incorporates a reasonable level of physical access and enhanced provision for people with sensory, intellectual, or cognitive impairment.

Robust

Robust housing is designed to incorporate a reasonable level of physical access provision and be very resilient, reducing the likelihood of reactive maintenance and the risk to the participant and the community.

Fully Accessible

Fully Accessible housing is designed to incorporate a high level of physical access provision for people with significant physical impairment.

High Physical Support

High Physical Support housing is designed to incorporate a high level of physical access provision for people with significant physical impairment and requiring very high levels of support.

NDIS Plan & Funding

Understanding your NDIS Plan

Your NDIS plan is a document that outlines the support and services that you are eligible to receive under the NDIS. It’s important to understand your plan so that you can make the most of your funding and achieve your goals.

Your plan will include information about your personal circumstances, goals, and needs. It will also outline the funding that you have been allocated for each support category, such as accommodation, transport, and personal care.

It’s important to review your plan regularly and make changes as needed. If you’re unsure about anything in your plan, you can contact the NDIS or your Support Coordinator.

>> If you need more information about your NDIS Plan, visit the official NDIS website.

NDIS Funding Options

The NDIS offers three types of funding: core supports, capital supports, and capacity building supports.

  • Core supports are for daily living activities like personal care, meal preparation, assistance with household tasks, transport, community access…

  • Capital supports are for purchasing equipment, home modifications, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and assistive technologies.

  • Capacity building supports are for support coordination, building skills, employment-related support, independence, and community participation.

How to apply for the NDIS?

If you have a disability that significantly impacts your daily life, you may be eligible for funding and support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

To apply, you need to first check if you meet the eligibility criteria, which includes having a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities. You also need to be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa, and be aged under 65 years old.

Once you have confirmed your eligibility, you can then start the application process by contacting the NDIS directly. They will provide you with a form to complete and a planning meeting with an NDIS planner, who will work with you to develop a plan that outlines your goals and the supports you require.
During this meeting, you will discuss your current support arrangements, as well as your future goals and aspirations. This will help the planner determine the level of support you require and the budget allocated to you.

It’s important to note that the application process can be complex, and it may be helpful to seek the advice of a Support Coordinator, who can guide you through the process and help you develop a plan that meets your needs.

>> Feel free to visit the NDIS application page for more information.
